Milford Regional Physician Group (MRPG) is proud to welcome Dr. Amy Costa. Dr. Costa will see patients at Milford Regional Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, located at 98 Prospect Street, Milford; and the Center for Adolescent & Young Adult Health, located at 100 Medway Road, Suite 204, Milford. She can be reached at 508.478.7135 (MROSM) or 508.482.5444 (CAYAH).

She comes to MRPG from Boston College, where she spent the last 17 years as a staff physician in the department of Student Health Services and also held the role of Assistant Director of Sports Medicine. Prior to that she worked for Maine Medical Center, and in private practice with Southern Maine Sports Medicine.

I look forward to working with coaches, athletic trainers, sports clubs and leagues, to take care of athletes of all ages in the community,” said Dr. Costa. “Sports and exercise are so valuable to physical and mental health. As a sports medicine clinician, I strive to keep people moving by reducing the risk of and treating sports injury and musculoskeletal injury.”

Active in the community as a team physician for several high school and college athletic teams, Dr. Costa also held the role as team physician for USA Hockey and the Portland Pirates. She has presented at numerous conferences on a variety of topics, including; concussion, pediatric running injuries, groin and hip pain in athletes, ankle pain, athletes with eating disorders, head and neck injuries, and stress fractures of the lower extremity.

Dr. Costa has a special interest in a condition called Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, commonly referred to as RED-S. This often unrecognized disorder is very common in male and female athletes, and can include low energy availability (inadequate caloric intake); amenorrhea (lack of menstrual periods); and low bone mineral density, all of which could lead to higher risk for sports injury.

Dr. Costa earned her BA in Chemistry from Wesleyan University, where she graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa and was later named to the Athletics Hall of Fame. She earned her medical degree from UMass Medical School and completed her residency in family practice and fellowship in sports medicine at Maine Medical Center. Board certified in family medicine, Dr. Costa also has added qualifications in sports medicine.

An avid runner, skier, and soccer player, Dr. Costa has been involved with many sporting events over the years, including the Boston Marathon, Maine Marathon, and was a covering physician for a prestigious World Wrestling Entertainment event in 2003. A native of Chelmsford, Dr. Costa currently resides in Norwood.
